McIlroy continues spectacular form to lead

  • Intro:

Rory McIlroy shot a four-under-par round of 67 on Friday (August 8) to hold a one-shot lead at the halfway stage of the USPGA Championship at Valhalla.

Evidently in some pain, Tiger Woods shot another 74 and missed the cut in a major for the fourth time.

    Script:

It was a dismal day for Tiger Woods as he missed the cut at the US PGA Championship on Friday.

He struggled throughout the day, even with the simplest of shots, the American appearing to be far from any kind of form.

The cut was set at one over par, Woods ended the day on six over par missing it comfortably, a result that puts further doubt on his Ryder Cup participation.

Meanwhile, Rory McIlroy continued his incredible period of form as he dominated the field at Valhalla.

The world number one started on the back nine after a 50 minute rain delay and made a couple of early birdies.

He claimed the lead as he sank a 30-foot eagle putt at the 18th hole.

McIlroy picked up a few more birdies late on in his round to finish the day on top of the field on nine-under-par for the tournament.

Meanwhile, Jim Furyk, runner-up at the PGA a year ago, hit a 68 to move to eight-under.

Rickie Fowler also surged into contention by shooting an impressive second round of 66.

He too is in a particularly good moment of his career becoming the first player since Woods in 2005 to finish in the top five of the first three majors of the year.

Finally, Australian Jason Day carded a superb round of 65.

Day was forced to withdraw from the Bridgestone Invitational last week suffering from vertigo but he now goes into the weekend level with Furyk and just a shot adrift of McIlroy.
