Rio de Janeiro welcomed sailors from around the world to the first official Olympic test event at Guanabara Bay.

The venue in Rio de Janeiro has been highly criticised for its pollution and waste.

Sailors raced on the bay waters and tested the currents and winds at the week-long Aquece Rio Sailing Regatta.

The water in Guanabara Bay has been criticised for its low quality, but sailors highlighted that conditions in the water had improved since the beginning of the year.

Brazil has just finished hosting the World Cup, which was marred by controversy and protests throughout the build up and the tournament itself.

The country is likely to face similar criticism as it prepares for yet another significant investment for the Olympic Games.

Rio de Janeiro will host the Summer Olympics in two years time from August 5th to 21st.

But Brazilians are far from pleased about the money going towards hosting major events instead of focusing housing, education and health care.
