Australia cruised past twice defending champions New Zealand 58-40 to win the netball gold at the XX Commonwealth Games on Sunday (3 August).

SOUNDBITE (English) Caitlin Bassett, Australian netball team member (on the win):

"I think there is a bit of relief. It's something we've been talking about for such a long time. We've been working so hard over the last four years and particularly in the last twelve months heading over to Canberra for camps and in and out of our ANZ season to do bits and pieces together. So it's been a lot of hard work. I feel like even these last two weeks in the village have dragged on forever. We just wanted to get to today and get to this gold medal match and there's definitely a bit of relief there."

SOUNDBITE (English) Natalie Medhurst, Australian netball team member (on what it means to win following on from the disappointment of 2010):

"I'm incredibly proud and elated. It's a massive thing. Something a lot of people dream of. I know being a part of Delhi, it was right there for the taking and we missed it. When you don't have something like that you certainly yearn for it. To be part of this with an incredible bunch of girls just makes it so much more special. It's a memory that is going to last a life time and I'll certainly look back on with very, very fond memories."

SOUNDBITE (English) Caitlin Bassett, Australian netball team member (on overcoming their rivals):

"We didn't think of it today as playing the Kiwis, they were just another opponent for us that we needed to overcome and I think that was really good for us. Sometimes you get a little bit stuck in a mental battle with them when you think about past results or who the players are in their team. You just need to know that you need to beat your own opponent and obviously work well as a unit together and I think we really did that today."
