  • Intro:

The top seed at the Citi Open in Washington, Tomas Berdych, is beaten by Canada's Vasek Pospisil on Thursday (31st July).

    Script:

Canada's Milos Raonic made it through to the quarter-finals of the Citi Open in Washington on Thursday, getting the better of Australia's Lleyton Hewitt with two tiebreaks.

The 2004 champion, seeded 14 here, pushed Raonic all the way, but ultimately could not cope with the number two seed's dominant serve.

Raonic, the world No. 7, claimed 72 per cent of points on his serve and put down 29 aces during the match.

The number two seed closed out a 7-6, 7-6 win in an hour and 50 minutes. Neither player dropped serve during the whole encounter.

The top seed, Tomas Berdych, having won so comfortably on Wednesday, was dumped out of the ATP 500 event by another Canadian, Vasek Pospisil.

The World No. 36 needed just 81 minutes to see off Berdych, breaking serve four times in a 6-2, 6-4 win.

The number 13 seed, who teamed up with Amierican Jack Sock to claim the 2014 Wimbledon doubles crown earlier this month, goes on to face tenth seed Santiago Giraldo of Colombia, a 6-2, 6-0 winner over Victor Estrella Burgos of the Dominican Republic.

Raonic's opponent in the last eight is another American, Steve Johnson, who dropped the first set against Ivo Karlovic, but edged two tiebreaks after that to win 3-6, 7-6, 7-6 in two hours.
