Friday, August 01 2014 by SNTV
  • Intro:

Commonwealth Games Federation chief executive Mike Hooper backs the decision to ban Australian Francois Etoundi from the 2014 Commonwealth Games after being held by police after an alleged assault on an unnamed Welsh athlete. Mr Hooper also talks about Nigerian gold medallist Chika Amalaha, who was provisionally suspended from the Games for failing a drugs test.

SOUNDBITE: (English) Mike Hooper, Commonwealth Games Federation (on Australian weightlifter Francois Etoundi's arrest):

"I think it is best I don't go into detail. Obviously there has been an assault charge laid. I don't wish to get into details of the specifics of the case, it is now sub-judice, going through the courts, going through the system. I believe he is appearing [in court] today and that will happen. But it is quite correct, we made our views very strong, very clear to team management early yesterday that we did not want this gentleman returning to the [athletes'] village and as a consequence of that, by end of play yesterday, and working with the Australian team, we fully support the decision and the question posed to us to withdraw the accreditation."

SOUNDBITE: (English) Mike Hooper, Commonwealth Games Federation (on the testing of the B sample testing of a Nigerian weightlifter who failed a doping test):

"Testing was done, was undertaken yesterday of the B sample, it normally takes up to 24 hours for that to come through, that didn't occur until... as I understand it, they presented themselves to the laboratory around one o'clock in the afternoon. So we would expect to receive the result later today. Once our medical commission has had the opportunity to review that, they will formally then write to the federation court, addressed to his royal highness, and appropriate follow-up as may or may not be necessary will follow, the process will follow..."
