Australia dominate swimming at Commonwealth Games

    The first track medal at the XX Commonwealth Games was won by Kenya's Caleb Ndiku, while track cycling concluded in Glasgow on Sunday (27 July).

    Sunday saw the start of the athletics at the Commonwealth Games and Kenya's Caleb Ndiku triumphed in the men's 5000m race at Hampden Park.

    However, the swimming saw a successful day for Australia as they top the medals table.

    Belinda Hocking claimed gold in the women's 200m backstroke with Emily Seebohm taking silver.

    The country went one better in the men's freestyle final making it an all-Australian podium with gold going to double reigning world champion James Magnussen.

    World record holder Liam Tancock of England failed to defend his Commonwealth title as Australia's Ben Treffers claimed gold in the men's 50-metre backstroke.

    To cap a great day for Australia, they broke the Commonwealth record winning the men's 4x200m freestyle relay final,

    Finally, in the cycling, Anna Meares was beaten by compatriot Stephanie Morton in the women's individual sprint gold medal match.

    While England's Laura Trott defied a kidney infection to win a thrilling duel with Wales' Elinor Barker in the women's points race, securing gold in a photo finish.
