Monday, July 28 2014 by SNTV
  • Intro:

Australia's marathon medallists talked on Sunday (27 July) about their success at the XX Commonwealth Games in Glasgow with Michael Shelley becoming the first Australian to win a Games gold medal since Steve Moneghetti.

    Script:

SOUNDBITE: (English) Michael Shelley, men's marathon gold medallist (On his win):

"I was just coming back to hopefully have a great performance, but to come away with a win. It's the first marathon I've ever won so I'm over the moon. Words can't describe it at the moment."

SOUNDBITE (English) Michael Shelley, marathon gold medallist (On his final effort to take the lead and win):

"I've been having problems at the 35-kilometre mark, so it was a little bit of a hesitant surge more than anything. I just thought have a go, you're in second at the moment, if you blow up you blow up, just see what happens. Had a go and was fortunate enough that the body held together and I was able to finish strong."

SOUNDBITE (English) Jess Trengove, marathon bronze medallist (On her bronze medal and being inspired by Shelley's win):

"It's all still sinking in to be honest. It was really exciting to hear at 28ks to hear that Michael had crossed the line and got the gold. That really spurred me on and I feel like I can credit some of this to Michael because it just made me have that extra bit of belief in myself as well. So a great day for Australia."
