'Kiwis target fifth Commonwealths gold'

  • Intro:

The New Zealand squad talk before taking on Canada in the opening Commonwealth Games Pool A match on Saturday. The Kiwis are aiming for a fifth straight Games gold medal in Glasgow, Scotland.

    Script:

    SOUNDBITE (English) Tim Mikkelson:

"Yeah, I suppose, we talked about and I suppose we're using it to fuel our, I suppose, trying to win a gold medal. What the guys have done before us and the legacy they've put in, we want, I suppose, to grow that and become part of it, so it's making us, I suppose, do the extras and [I] suppose not wanting to be that first [New Zealand] team that hasn't won gold."

SOUNDBITE (English) Kiwis coach Sir Gordon Tietjens:

"And also we've got Canada, who are also a big, bruising side that's... that've got an international flavour with them as well and Kieran Crowley coaching them but they also play 15s for their national team as well and they're pretty good rugby players and our last encounter with them was... I think on full-time in Japan was about 17-17 and it finished up 22-17. We since played them in a final and we might have beaten them comprehensively but this [the Commonwealth Games] is a one-off tournament and we know at 10:30 on Saturday morning we gotta game ahead of us [against Canada] and it's going to be a toughie."
