  • Intro:

Colin Montgomerie described Rory McIlroy as "world class" on Monday (21 July) after the Northern Irishman won the Open Championship at Hoylake by two shots on Sunday (20 July).

Ricky Fowler, who finished joint-second, said McIlroy's two eagles in the final three holes on Saturday proved to be crucial

SOUNDBITE: (English) Ricky Fowler, joint-second 2014 Open Championship:

"Well, yeah Rory he obviously got off to a great start, you know back-to-back 66s, 12-under through two days going into the weekend. You know I feel like where he really kind of separated himself was his finish on Saturday, in the afternoon. I caught him and made a couple of bogeys coming in and he eagled sixteen and eighteen, that was definitely where he put a gap on the field a little bit. I was six shots back and Sergio (Garcia), who tied for second with me, was seven back going into Sunday. So that gave him a little bit of breathing room there."

    SOUNDBITE: (English) Colin Montgomerie:

"We've got someone now that is really world, world class and when he plays like that there is very few that can beat him and all credit to him. You know some got close, a few got close, a couple of shots, three shots, but he was always just ahead wasn't he and delighted to see for him."

SOUNDBITE: (English) Colin Montgomerie: (Q: People are talking about records being broken?)

"Well he goes into the USPGA obviously at Valhalla as one of, if not the favourite, you know, quite rightly so. The competition is good mind you and you've got to be careful, Martin Kaymer wins the US Open by eight shots and everyone thinks he can win every tournament. It's not that easy, at the same time you have your weeks and your time and let's hope Rory continues but at the same time the competition is extremely good."
