SOUNDBITE: (French) Eric Delchambre, Millau Police Chief:

"It all started when a couple were arguing in a nightclub and the player from Clermont Auvergne witnessed it. He was very concerned about the young girl and so the trouble started there. However, the person who was the aggressor became a little bit violent and an accident happened there, in the corner of the night club. Of course, the player from Clermont Auvergne couldn't respond to this dispute that was happening,or this individual, and he was very worried about everyone that was with him. Following this, what happened was that the players from Clermont Auvergne began to walk back to the hotel, as they were in transit back there, they left in a small group, some left in a vehicle, some went by foot. The group that were going by foot back to the hotel were the three future victims because unfortunately they fell into trouble. The person who had previously got into an argument in the club came back and, with others, waited until the rugby players approached them. They were particularly aggressive, they were using swords and machetes. The rugby players were extremely badly injured."
