Steven Gerrard has retired from international football, the English FA released a statement on Monday confirming the news.

Gerrard made 114 appearances for the English national team, a career that spanned 14 years and saw him go to three World Cups and two European championships.

The 34-year-old retires on the back of an immensely disappointing World Cup for England, that saw them finish bottom of their group collecting just a point in three matches.

Gerrard made his debut for England back in 2000, he ends his career a cap short of David Beckham, who holds the record of caps for an outfield player.

The Liverpool captain admitted the decision was also made in order to prolong his club career as he looks to bring a Premier League title to Anfield.

Liverpool came agonisingly close to the title last season, and with the upcoming season involving Champions League football, Gerrard elected to focus on his club career.

Gerrard becomes the second international captain to retire since the World Cup following Philipp Lahm, who of course ended his career with Germany as World champion.
