Intro:
Arianna Errigo and Alexey Cheremisinov lifted the foil gold medals at the Fencing World Championships in Kazan on Saturday (July 19).
Script:
Arianna Errigo was in top form ahead of the women's sabre final at the Fencing World Championships in Kazan on Saturday.
She defeated her fellow-Italian, 14-time world champion Valentina Vezzali, in the semi-finals and another Italian awaited in the final.
Martina Batini was always in difficulty and eventually went down 15-7.
Vezzali and Ines Boubakri of Tunisia picked up the bronze medals.
The home fencers had been decimated in the women's competition, with all eliminated by the end of the round of 16.
But the Russians were back in the men's event - with Alexey Cheremisinov making it all the way to the final.
Up against him - Ma Jianfei of China, 30 years old later in July and currently ranked number one in the world by the FIE.
This was Cheremisinov's day though, the 29-year-old winning 15-11 to add the world title to his European title of 2012.
