Leonardo Mayer of Argentina defeated German wild card Peter Gojowczyk 6-3, 6-2 in the first round to set up a second round encounter with Guillermo Garcia-Lopez of Spain.

The winner of that will then play Dominic Thiem in the third round, after the Austrian upset eight-seeded Marcel Granollers 2-6, 6-3, 7-5.

In other first-round matches, German wild card Alexander Zverev eased past Dutchman Robin Haase 6-0, 6-2 to earn the adoration of the partisan home crowd.

The youngster will now meet fifth-seeded Mikhail Youzhny, who was given a first-round bye.

Elsewhere, third-seeded Tommy Robredo of Spain, who won the tournament in 2006, beat compatriot Daniel Gimeno-Traver 6-2, 7-5, setting up a third round clash with the 14th seed Joao Sousa of Portugal or Lukas Rosol.

Rosol reached the second round when German wild card Julian Reister had to withdraw with the Czech leading 6-4, 2-1.

Top seed David Ferrer, who accepted a wild card to the tournament, rallied to defeat Mikhail Kukushkin of Kazakhstan 2-6, 6-3, 6-2.

Next up for the Spaniard will be the winner of Juan Monaco of Argentina and Italian Andreas Seppi.
