The opening round of the Hamburg Open got under way in Germany on Monday.
Andrey Golubev of Kazakhstan thrashed Frenchman Benoit Paire 6-1 in the opening set.
But Paire restored parity after securing the second set by the same scoreline. The 25-year-old then edged the third set tie-break to win 1-6 6-1 7-6 and book a meeting with Colombian Santiago Giraldo.
In a contest between two of the ATP World Tour’s rising stars, Dominic Thiem finished strongly to defeat Jiri Vesely 7-5 6-0.
The Austrian created 16 break point chances and converted five of them for victory in 83 minutes.
Thiem goes on to face eighth seed Marcel Granollers of Spain.
There was also something for the home crowd to cheer about as Tobias Kamke of Germany defeated Finn Jarkko Nieminen 6-3 4-6 6-2.
Kamke now takes on 13th seed Federico Delbonis. The Argentinian will hope to fare better than his footballing counterparts did last night.
