Competitors battle at the ninth World Egg Throwing Championships

  • Intro:

Around 300 competitors battled for top honours at the ninth World Egg Throwing Championships in the English village of Swaton on Sunday (June 29).

    Script:

The title is misleading - 'egg throwing' is only part of the deal at Swaton.

Granted, there is no doubt that the action is central to 'target throwing'. As it is to 'egg catching', a practice where the very young too, can create their own havoc.

But mechanical means are used to propel the egg in the event - paying homage to art of mediaeval siegecraft. With sporting records going back to 1322, eggs would have been flying when this piece of hardware was in its heyday.

A German team came out on top - reflecting the international appeal of this discipline.

Indeed, a new world record of 75.15 metres was set by the Smink brothers in Holland in May.

Absolutely no throwing allowed though, in the 'egg Russian Roulette.'

And here, the title stayed in England - Mike Fowler proving to have a rare gift when it comes to differentiating between an uncooked and hard-boiled egg.
