The second round of the BMW International Open began in Cologne, Germany, on Friday.

Joint-overnight leader Rafa Cabrera-Bello was two shots clear in first place when disaster struck.

Playing his third stroke, from the rough in front of the green, the man from the Canary Islands inadvertently hit the ball twice as he attempted to chip clear.

Cabrera-Bello stayed afloat at the top of the standings when Danny Willett -- who shared the overnight lead -- missed an eagle putt. But the Englishman sank this brilliant birdie and drew level.

Also occupying first place is Emiliano Grillo, who landed this brilliant birdie on the way to carding his second successive 66 to complete the four-way tie at summit of the standings.

The tension at the top was palpable, so much so that play was suspended because of the threat of lightning.
