The second rowing World Cup event of the season was held on the Lac d'Aiguebelette at Savoie in France on Sunday, with nearly 700 athletes in action.

There was a slow start out of the gate for Emma Twigg of New Zealand, silver medallist at the 2013 World Championships, in the women's single sculls.

But Twigg managed to overcome her poor start to lead by halfway, eventually winning the race by 1.83 seconds from China's Duan Jingli.

The United States of America women's eights lived up to their pre-event favourites tag as the reigning World and Olympic champions.

In a close race with their north American neighbours and close rivals Canada, the USA boat came from behind with just 500 metres left to take the honours by 1.05 seconds.

There was also a win for the 2012 Olympic champions in the men's pair, as New Zealand's Eric Murray and Hamish Bond continued their remarkable run of an unbeaten races since 2009.

They beat Bastian Bechler and Anton Braun of Germany into second, while Great Britain's Matthew Gotrel and Paul Bennett finished third.

Great Britain won the men's quadruple sculls after coming from behind to pip Germany.

And in the blue riband event for the men, the men's eights, the United States - who finished outside the medals in the event at the London Olympics - held off Great Britain by 1.64 seconds to secure the men's and women's double.
