  • Intro:

Amy Yang shot a two-under-par third round 68 on Saturday (June 21st) to move into a tie for the lead in the US Women's Open with Michelle Wie.

    Script:

At the U.S. Women's Open on Pinehurst No. 2, American Michelle Wie recovered from a dire four-hole stretch to claw back into a tie for the lead.

But the story of the day on Saturday proved to be July Inkster.

Playing the Women's Open for the 35th time, the veteran opened the day at six-over-par, but produced a terrific four-under 66.

The 53-year-old, who won the tournament in 1999 and 2002, sank five birdies and now has a chance to make history by becoming the oldest Women's Open champion.

Inkster ended the day tied for third place with Stephanie Meadow, amateur Minjee Lee and the 2012 winner of this tournament, Na Yeon Choi.

Meadow chipped in on the sixth hole for one of five birdies on her card of 69.

While Lee recorded her worst round of the tournament - a two-over 72.

Even so, the 18-year-old Australian is set to improve upon her first major result, a share of 24th place at the Kraft Nabisco Championship back in April.

Amy Yang, who took second place in 2012, shot a two-under 68 on Saturday to move below par for the event.

She made the turn at one-under and birdied the 10th and 12th holes before losing a stroke with a bogey at 18.

Despite the disappointing finish, Yang will play alongside Wie in the final group on Sunday.
