England and Argentina met in the third place play-off at the men's Hockey World Cup on Sunday.

Argentina made the better start to the game and England goalkeeper George Pinner had to be at his best to deny Gonzalo Peillat from a penalty corner in the final five minutes of the first half.

Argentina eventually broke through in the second half, with Matias Paredes scoring twice in the space of two minutes.

Paredes collected a long pass from the left wing, to draw Pinner off his goalline and steer a shot past last defender Adam Dixon in the 55th minute.

60 seconds later Paredes went straight for goal from Lucas Vila's cutback pass to make it 2-0.

Argentina Goalkeeper Juan Vivaldi then stopped Ashley Jackson's shot from a penalty corner with three minutes to go.

The game finished in a 2-0 win for Argentina, who secured a podium place ahead of the final, between defending champions Australia and hosts the Netherlands.
