England reach hockey World Cup semi-finals in dramatic style

  • Intro:

A late penalty saw England beat Belgium 3-2 to reach the semi-finals of the men's hockey World Cup on Monday (9 June).

While Japan and Belgium's women played out a meaningless 2-2 draw.

    Script:

England knew the score, beat Belgium and they'd be through to the Hockey World Cup semi-finals, anything else and they'd be out.

Despite a strong start from England, it was Belgium who scored first.

Simon Gougnard cruised round the English defence, and Thomas Briels with the smart finish.

England pulled level just six minutes later when Nick Catlin slammed the ball home from the top of the circle.

They then took the lead for the first time in the match, four minutes into the second half.

A committed run from Catlin put the Belgium defence under real pressure, and Ashley Jackson hit the back of the net for a 2-1 scoreline.

Yet with just seven minutes to play, Belgium hit back.

Tanguy Cosyns firing home a penalty corner and England were on their way out.

In the frantic final minutes, England were awarded a penalty after a penalty corner.

Iain Lewers appeared the coolest man to close out a 3-2 England win and book their place in the semi-finals.

Elsewhere Japan and Belgium's ladies played out a 2-2 draw with neither side reaching the semi-finals which begins on Wednesday.
