Maria Sharapova denied a determined Simona Halep her first ever grand slam title as she won the French Open for a second time.

Halep had been in a 2-0 lead in the opener, but Sharapova, chasing her fifth slam, showed her experience to come back and win it 6-4.

2-0 down in the second, fourth seed Halep, who went out in the first round of the same competition the year before, and plenty of work to do.

But the Romanian broke in the third game...before holding her nerve in the tiebreaker to send the match into a decider.

However, Sharapova, who won her first slam as a 17-year-old at Wimbledon ten years ago, once again showed all of her guile.

The Russian had an extra gear when it mattered most, to finally end Halep's dream run.

Both players are among the top five seeds at Wimbledon which starts at the end of June,
