Following a lengthy rain delay, the French Open quarter-finals continued on Wednesday afternoon with Sara Errani facing Andrea Petkovic.

Errani made the better start, breaking Petkovic's serve in the opening game, but after holding for a 2-0 lead, the opening set quickly got away from the Italian.

Petkovic won the next six games in succession to take the first set 6-2.

She carried that momentum with her into the second and booked her place in the semi-finals with an emphatic 6-2, 6-2 straight sets win.

It's the first time Petkovic has reached the last 4 in a Grand Slam tournament.

The number 28 seed will now face Simona Halep - a straight sets winner over former French Open champion Svetlana Kuznetsova in the day's other quarter-final.

Halep, the highest remaining seed in the women's singles draw, took the first set comfortably 6-2.

Kuznetsova then received medical treatment off court, but it didn't prove to be much help as Halep once again seized the initiative.

She went on to take the second set, again 6-2 to secure her spot in the semi-finals.

It's also the first time Halep has made it past the last 8 stage of a Grand Slam competition.
