The women's quarter-finals at the French Open got underway on Tuesday, with Maria Sharapova taking on Garbine Muguruza.

Muguruza had already beaten defending champion Serena Williams earlier in the tournament made a perfect start against Sharapova, winning the opening set 6-1.

But number seven seed Sharapova found her feet in the second, edging it 7-5. And the Russian took full control in the third set, wrapping up a 1-6, 7-5, 6-1 victory to progress to the semi-finals where she will face Eugenie Bouchard.

The 18th seed Bouchard booked her spot in the last four coming through in three sets against Carla Suarez Navarro.

Bouchard came back from 5-2 to force a first set tie-break, which she took 7-4. However Suarez Navarro, whose only previous French Open quarter-final appearance came back in 2008, took the second 6-2.

And in the deciding set it was the hugely popular Canadian Bouchard who emerged victorious 7-5 sealing her place in the semi-finals.
