  • Intro:

The village of Coxheath in the English county of Kent hosted the World Custard Pie Throwing Championship at the weekend (31 May), with 'The Grannies' beating last year's winners 'Pie and Smash' in the final.

    Script:

Forget Brazil and the Jules Rimet trophy, the major sporting event of the summer saw competitors eyeing this elusive prize.

The compeition, which takes places in the English village of Coxheath, was Inspired by actor and comedian Charlie Chaplin and began in 1967.

A maximum of six points are awarded for a pie thrown straight in the face whilst judges can also award up to five points for the most original throwing techniques.

But far from merely a sticky free-for-all, the event is a highly tactical affair -

SOUNDBITE (English) Brian Mortimer, event organiser:
    (On possible strategy).

"I think you've got to catch the opponents. When you have four against four and you're looking across at your opponents, don't throw at the one that's opposite you, try and throw diagonally and then you can catch them by surprise."

This year's competition was won by 'the Grannies', who outscored the oppositon 'Pie and Smash' to lift the tophy.
