Lleida-Alguaire Airport in the north-east of Spain was the battleground for the inaugural Air Race F1 event last weekend.

Unlike some air races, Air Race F1 sees several planes competing at the same time, as the sport's CEO Jeff Zaltman explains:

SOUNDBITE: (English) Jeff Zaltman, Air Race F1 CEO:

"What the spectators are going to see today is an air race. This is actually called a formula one classic aeroplane and we've got eight aeroplanes racing together, at the same time around a tight circuit, which is only two kilometres end-to-end, ten metres above the ground at over 400, 450 even kilometres per hour. They race together, ten laps, first one across the line wins."

The race showcased the extraordinary skills of some of the world's best and fastest pilots.

Christian Guilie had the honour of claiming the first Air Race F1 victory - the Frenchman finishing ahead of American Jay Jones in second place and Sweden's Thom Richard in third.
