Roger Federer survived a scare to progress to the fourth round of the French Open in Paris on Friday.

The 17 time grand slam winner needed more than three hours to grind out a 7-5 6-7 6-2 6-4 victory against Russian Dmitry Tursunov. The win sets up a meeting Latvia's Ernests Gulbis.

Elsewhere second-seeded Novak Djokovic beat Marin Cilic for the ninth successive time to reach the fourth round.

Djokovic had not lost to the Croat since they first played each other six years ago and despite losing the third set came through 6-3, 6-2, 6-7 6-4.

In the women's draw third seed Agnieszka Radwanska crashed out in straight sets against unseeded Ajla Tomljanovic.

The defeat means the top three seeds in the women's drawer have all been eliminated, following the exits of Serena Williams and Li Na.
