The second round of the French Open continued at Roland Garros on Thursday with the first match of the day pitting 2013 losing finalist David Ferrer against Italy's Simone Bolelli.

It was the fifth time the two players had faced each other, with Ferrer - the fifth seed here - boasting a record of four wins from four.

Ferrer soon made that five wins from five after taking a comfortable 6-2 6-3 6-2 win to reach the third round.

Eight-time French Open champion Rafael Nadal faced Dominic Thiem of Austria in his second round match.

The world number one was in ruthless form on Thursday taking the first two sets in just an hour and 20 minutes.

Despite Thiem showing streaks of class and edging out a 3-1 lead in the third, he was overshadowed by his error count.

Nadal won the next five games to take a 6-2 6-2 6-3 win and book his place in the third round.

Wimbledon champion Andy Murray eased past Australian Marinko Matosevic in his match.

The 7th seed also advancing in straight sets, with a 6-3 6-1 6-3 win.
