Italian Fabio Aru wins Stage 15 of the Giro

    Fabio Aru of Italy claimed victory on the tough uphill finish to Montecampione in the 15th stage of the Giro d'Italia on Sunday (May 25).

    Script:

    Stage 15 of the Giro d'italia saw Rigoberto Uran lead the pack off with a ceremonial style start.

    The Colombian started the day 32 seconds ahead of Australian Cadel Evans.

    The main break of the day was formed of 12 riders.

    It had a 10-minute lead with 78 kilometres (48.5 miles) remaining, before the peloton - driven by Nero Sottoli - started to reel them in.

    However, the big names came back into the race when it mattered.

    Phillip Deignan of Team Sky made his move with 9km to go, yet he fell off the pace and dropped off with 2.5km to go.

    While Uran was happy to settle for a place in amongst the leading peloton, it was left for Sicilian, Fabio Aru, to be cheered onto claim the stage victory.

    The Italian's victory moving him from seventh to fourth in the general classification.

    Uran meanwhile extends his overall lead to 1min and 3secs, with a day off on Monday before Stage 16 resumes on Tuesday.
