The 14th stage of the Giro d’Italia got underway in Agliè on Saturday.

The 164km stage is the first of the high mountain stages, with two category one climbs.

Despite the dry conditions there was another crash when the peloton went through a roundabout. Fortunately no one was seriously injured.

This increased the gap between the breakaway group to more than ten minutes, at one point.

As spectators lit flares, so Miguel Ángel Rubiano Chávez's hopes of success went up in smoke after this fall.

With only a kilometre to go, Team Sky's Dario Cataldo launched his sprint for the line early. But Bardiani Valvole's Enrico Battaglin produced a devastating late surge and overtook his fellow Italian to win in a time of 4 hours 34 minutes and 41 seconds. Team Columbia's Jarlinson Pantano took third.

Rigoberto Urán was three minutes and four seconds off the pace in 22nd and his overall lead over Cadel Evans was cut from 37 second to 32 seconds.

Battaglin enjoyed his stage win and Urán was relieved to retain the pink jersey; the Colombian will want to avoid being left red faced again in tomorrow's stage 15.
