Italian cyclist Diego Ulissi won stage eight of the Giro d'Italia on Saturday.

The Lampre rider won in a race to the line with Robert Kiserlovski of Trek Factory Racing as the race entered its first mountain stage.

Michael Matthews, the maglia rosa (pink jersey) wearer, was not in contention to defend his overall classification lead on the climbs.

His fellow Australian Cadel Evans - winner of the 2011 Tour de France - took over at the head of the race with a fifth place finish on the stage.

Evans, gained ground on his main rivals after dodging Thursday's crashes, now leads the Colombian Rigoberto Uran by 57 seconds. Poland's Rafal Majka is third, 1min 10sec off the pace.

But it's Ulissi who was left to celebrate a stage win after outsprinting his Croatian opponent Kiserlovski.
