Chardy shocks Federer in Rome

Thursday, May 15 2014 by SNTV
  • Intro:

Wins for Andy Murray and Jo-Wilfried Tsonga - but defeat for Roger Federer - in the second round of the Italian Open on Wednesday.

    Script:

Andy Murray was forced to retire injured when he faced Marcel Granollers in the second round of the Italian Open last year.

The Scot gained his revenge in Rome on Wednesday.

In what was only his seventh match on clay this season, Murray won in straight sets to set up a last 16 tie with Jurgen Melzer.

Roger Federer returned to the court following the birth of his twins in a great mood as he won the first set against Jeremy Chardy 6-1.

But that only seemed to jerk France's Chardy in to life as he went on to take the match to a third set.

Those late nights with new babies amy have taken their toll on Federer as Chardy had a match for everything the Swiss could throw at him.

And Chardy went on to complete an impressive turnaround to eliminate Federer, who believed the blustery conditions played a part.

    SOUNDBITE: (english) Roger Federer

"Unfortunately it happened this way today but you know...i think we both struggled at times in the wind today and, in the end it was a short here or there that decided the match."

There was better news for Jo-Wilfried Tsonga who recorded the 300th tour-level win of his career as he defeated Kevin Anderson 7-6 7-6.
