Lukas Rosol beat home favourite Fabio Fognini 6-3, 6-2 in the first round of the Italian Open on Monday.

The No. 13 seed Fognini lost serve three times against the 56th-ranked Rosol, who did not face a break point on route to victory.

Elsewhere Giles Simon beat Italian wildcard Filippo Volandri in straight sets, to set up a meeting with defending champion Rafa Nadal in the next round.

And Mikhail Youzhny, the 14th seed from Russia, beat Nicolas Mahut 6-4, 6-4 in one hour and 30 minutes.

Whilst Jo-Wilfried Tsonga beat Alexandr Dolgopolov 6-3, 7-6, to progress to the second round of the tournament. Tsonga now needs just one more victory for his 300th career win.

The eight top-seeded players have first-round byes in the Italian Open. One of the only top players not in Rome was Kei Nishikori of Japan, citing a lower back and hip injury.
