Maria Sharapova beat Sam Stosur in straight sets at the Madrid Open on Thursday, to progress to the quarter-finals of the tournament.

The four-time Grand Slam winner was broken just once to seal her 13th win over Stosur in 15 meetings.

She will now play Australian Open champion Li Na in the last, in what promises to be an intriguing encounter.

Elsewhere Ana Ivanovic enjoyed a straight sets victory against Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova, winning 6-1, 6-2.

The pair last meet at the 2013 Dubai Open second, a meeting which Ivanovic went on to win. And the Serbian won this clash in just one hour and seven minutes

Ivanovic will now face either Simona Halep of Romania or Sabine Lisicki of Germany in the quarter-finals.
