At the Madrid Open, top seed Rafa Nadal took to the court to face Argentina's Juan Monaco in the second round.

The Spaniard is looking to secure his fourth title but arrived in Madrid following back-to-back quarter-final elimination in Monte Carlo and Barcelona.

The defending champion suffered a slightly shaky start as he was broken in the third game of the match.

However, that was all he needed to trigger his best tennis, not dropping another game as he brushed his opponent aside with ease in a little over an hour.

The 6-1 6-0 victory means Nadal will face Jarrko Nieminen in the next round.

Meanwhile, sixth seed Tomas Berdych is also through to the next round of the Madrid Open.

He improved his record against South African Kevin Anderson to 11-0 following a straight foward victory, 6-1 6-4.

John Isner on the other hand faced a more difficult task to qualify for the third round.

It took three sets to overcome Australia's Marinko Matosevic, the first two sets were decided with tie breaks and the third looked to be heading down a similar path.

Isner was able to secure a break at the death winning the decider 7-5 and setting up a clash with fifth seed David Ferrer.

Finally, there was space for an upset in Madrid, as Dominic Thiem secured his biggest career victory.

He came from a set down to beat third seed Stanislav Wawrinka 1-6 6-2 6-4.

The 20-year-old Austrian qualifier showing remarkable composure on his way to defeating the Australian Open champion.
