Fifth seed David Ferrer struggled in his second round match at the Madrid Open before coming through in three sets against fellow Spaniard Albert Ramos.

At the end of a tense tie-break in the opening set, Ferrer eventually prevailed with a cross-court winner.

But four straight errors allowed Ramos, who's ranked just 115 in the world, to clinch the second set by seven games to five.

A visibly frustrated Ferrer clung on to take the decider 6-3, saying after the match that the thin air at high altitude had affected the flight of the ball and his performance.

Meanwhile, Japan's Kei Nishikori, seeded 10, continued to impress on clay.

The Barcelona Open winner eased into the third round following a 6-3, 6-1 victory over Spain's Guillermo Garcia-Lopez.

Despite being broken early in the first set, Nishikori quickly levelled and wrapped up the opening set with a cleverly disguised drop shot.

Garcia-Lopez was totally outplayed in the second, failing to recover from the loss of his opening service game.

A straightforward win for Nishikori gifts him a place in round three, where he will face Milos Raonic.

The Canadian eighth seed had made a solid start to the clay-court season, reaching back-to-back quarter-finals in Monte Carlo and Oeiras.

And he was far too strong for Jeremy Chardy.

The French player did little to trouble Raonic who ran out a 6-3, 6-3 victory.

Roger Federer withdrew from the Madrid Open on Tuesday for the birth of his second set of twins.

Novak Djokovic remains side-lined with a long-term wrist injury.
