    Script:

Alexandr Dolgopolov beat 13th seed Fabio Fognini in the first-round at the Madrid Open on Tuesday.

Thirteenth seed Fognini retired from the Barcelona Open last month after losing ten games in a row to Santiago Giraldo and his recent poor form on clay, continued against the Ukranian.

Dolgopolov hit 24 winners on his way to victory and will now meet Ernests Gulbis of Latvia in the second round.

Elsewhere number 14 seed Tommy Haas suffered an early exit as he was beaten by Dutchman Igor Sijsling.

The 36-year-old Hass took the opening set 6-3, but Sijsling came back strongly to notch his first-ever win in four meetings against Haas.

Sijsling eventually came through 3-6, 6-1, 6-4 to set up a meeting with Jarkko Nieminen in the second round.
