  • Intro:

Tennis world number one Rafael Nadal was made an adopted son of Madrid in a ceremony in the Spanish capital on Monday.

    Script:

He might have won 13 grand slams, sports awards galore and enjoyed success around the world, but Rafael Nadal certainly seemed humbled to have been made an adopted son of Madrid.

The 27-year-old was awarded the highest honour the Spanish capital can bestow on someone born outside Madrid, in a ceremony conducted by mayor Ana Botella, at the Palacio de Cibeles.

The Mallorcan's attention will soon turn to the Madrid Open as he attempts to bring an end to his indifferent clay court form.

Two recent defeats on the clay of Monte-Carlo and Barcelona have left some people questioning whether the world number one's dominance on the surface is beginning to wane.

Nadal will be keen to show the tennis world that he's still the man to beat on clay when he takes on either Jurgen Melzer and Juan Monaco in the first round of the Madrid Open.
