The murder trial of Paralympic athlete Oscar Pistorius was adjourned before lunch in Pretoria on Monday after the defence was unable to call more witnesses to the stand.

On Monday morning, defence lawyer - Barry Roux - called forward Pistorius's neighbours in the Silver Woods Estate, Carice Viljoen and her father Johan Stander, who went to his house shortly after he shot and killed his girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp on Valentine's Day last year.

Stander was first to be questioned and he spoke of the state of Mr.Pistorius immediately following the shooting.

'He said on the call, Johan, please please come to my house. I've shot Reeva, I thought she was an intruder. Please, please come quick.'

The neighbour went on to say that there had been a number of break-ins in the Silver Woods Estate area, however under cross-examination accepted the area to be a safe place to live.

Following the questioning of Stander, his daughter was questioned and she quoted Mr. Pistorius following the shooting with Reeva Steenkamp in his arms and saying: 'Stay with me my love.' And of how he was "torn apart" by the situation.

Judge Thikozile Masipa adjourned proceedings to allow the Pistorius defence team time to line up witnesses on behalf of Pistorius.

The case will reopen at 9:30 Tuesday morning.
