The first round of matches at the Madrid Open saw some big names in action.

First up, recent winner of the Barcelona Open - Kei Nishikori, seeded 10th here, saw off Croat Ivan Dodig in straight sets.

The Japanese man will face Spain's Guillermo Garcia-Lopez in Round two.

Jo-Wilfried Tsonga faced Edouard Roger-Vasselin in an all-French contest.

The 11th seed needed three sets to take the match and advance to play either Lleyton Hewitt or Colombian qualifier Santiago Giraldo.

Jon Isner also advanced on Monday, knocking out another qualifier - Russia's Teymuraz Gabashvili.

The American sealed a 7-6(8), 6-4 victory and set up a second round meeting with Australian Marinko Matosevic.

The top eight seeds received a bye from Round 1, including the top ranked Rafa Nadal and second seed Stan Wawrinka.
