A resurgent Carlos Berlocq has recovered from losing the opening set to win the Portugal Open.

The Argentinian beat Tomas Berdych of the Czech Republic 0-6, 7-5, 6-1.

    Script:

The world number six, and top seed, Tomas Berdych faced Carlos Berlocq - the world number 44 - in the final of the Portuguese Open.

Berlocq was chasing just the second singles title of his career, while Berdych - who has reached the final four at all four Grand Slams - was aiming to win his 10th and continue his preparations for the French Open later this month.

Though put under more pressure that the scoreline might suggest, Berdych played the key points well in the opening set and never allowed Berlocq to settle on serve.

The result - a 6-0 first set to Berdych which seemed to put him in firm control of the match.

But Berlocq came back immediately and eventually won his first game of the match, breaking Berdych in the opening game of the second set.

He followed that up with a valuable hold, but struggled to fully impose himself.

A decisive break in the 11th game of the set, saw the Argentine 6-5 ahead and serving for the set - a superb cross-court forehand winner giving him the game and the second set, 7-5.

From there, the Argentine pushed on and as Berdych's form seemed to desert him, he powered to a 5-0 third set lead.

Berdych grabbed a late break of serve in the sixth game, but was unable to put any real pressure on his opponent and Berlocq duly broke straight back to close out an emphatic 0-6 7-5 6-1.

Lying down on the red clay of the court, the delight of the Argentine was evident.

He has never progressed beyond the second round of a Grand Slam tournament before, but displaying this kind of fight he will be hoping that 2014 could reap further rewards.
