Carla Suárez Navarro had Svetlana Kuznetsova standing in the way of winning her first WTA title in the Portugal Open final on Saturday.

The Spaniard had reached the final of the clay-court event in each of the past two years and had also finished as runner-up on three other occasions at the Tour level.

Navarro started brightly and took this point with a backhand winner before claiming the first set.

Cue Kuznetsova's comeback. The Russian demonstrated why she is the former world number two with 13 WTA titles to her name, by wrong-footing her five foot four inch opponent and going on to level the match at one set all.

But on her favoured surface, Navarro broke Kuznetsova with this forehand cross-court winner.

The tournament favourite eventually prevailed 6-4, 3-6, 6-4 to win her maiden WTA competition at the sixth attempt.

The 25-year-old from the Canary Islands now has 26 WTA-level match wins this season, more than anyone else on tour; giving Navarro plenty to sing about.
