But Lukasz Kubot is no slouch.
He made the semi-finals of Wimbledon last year and he wasn't going to let the Russian progress easily.
In fact Poland's Kubot won the first set and continued to frustrate Gabashvili in the second.
And with a delicate touch, Kubot booked his place in the second round, where he will face Carlos Berlocq of Argentina.
