The Portgual Open got underway on Monday with Yanina Wickmayer getting her clay court season underway against Urszula Radwanska.

The Belgian won her first career title at Oeiras back in 2009, and is in search of some form having suffered early exits in her last two tournaments.

Radwanska on the other hand missed the end of 2013 and the start of 2014 with a shoulder injury.

And the injury has impacted her form negatively having been eliminated in the first round of her five previous WTA tournaments.

It was Wickmayer who looked the more confident of the two, hitting a number of groundstrokes sweetly before capturing an early break on her way to taking the opening set 6-4.

Radwanska came back stronger in the second set however, breaking her opponent early and building to a 5-3 lead.

The Polish player was unable to close the set though, Wickmayer making a comeback as she won the next four games to win the match 6-4 7-5.

The Belgian will face the winner of the match between Alexandra Cadantu and fourth seed Roberta Vinci in the next round.
