Obama criticises 'ignorant' Sterling

Monday, April 28 2014 by SNTV
  • Intro:

US President Barack Obama rebuked the owner of the Los Angeles Clippers, Donald Sterling, on Sunday. The NBA is investigating a report of an audio recording in which a man purported to be Sterling makes racist remarks while speaking to his girlfriend. The real estate mogul later said the recording 'does not reflect his views'. Mr Obama was speaking alongside Malaysia Prime Minister Najib Razak during a trip to Kuala Lumpur, the first serving US president to visit the predominantly-Muslim nation for nearly 50 years.

SOUNDBITE: (English) Barack Obama, the US President, (asked to respond to Donald Sterling's reported comments):

"When ignorant folks want to advertise their ignorance, you don't really have to do anything, you just let them talk and that's what happened here."

SOUNDBITE: (English) Barack Obama, the US President, (asked to respond to Donald Sterling's reported comments):

"The United States continues to wrestle with the legacy of race and slavery and segregation -- that's still there, the vestiges of discrimination. We've made enormous strides but you're going to continue to see this percolate up every so often, and I think that we just have to be clear and steady in denouncing it, teaching our children differently, but also remaining hopeful that part of why some statements like this stand out so much is because... there has been this shift in how we view ourselves."
