  • Intro:

Round two of the UCI Mountainbike World Cup downhill belonged to the Atherton family in Cairns, Australia on Saturday (26th April) - with Rachel Atherton taking the women's title and her brother Gee prevailing in the men's event.

    Script:

On a course left muddy and slippery by constant rain over the last week, it was Britain's Gee Atherton who coped best with the conditions in the men's UCI World Cup downhill in Cairns on Saturday.

Atherton was comfortably clear of his rivals, finishing the course in 4 minutes 0.7 seconds - over four seconds quicker than his nearest rival and compatriot Josh Bryceland.

US rider Neko Mullaly finished third quickest.

In the women's event, it was also a battle between two British riders.

Manaon Carpenter, the World Cup leader posted a leading time of 5 minutes and 2.2 seconds - but that proved to be an easy target for Rachel Atherton to overcome.

Atherton took both the win and the leader's jersey by smashing the previous best with a time of 4 minutes 50.5 seconds.

An unforgettable day for the Atherton family.
