Latvia's Ernests Gulbis and Kei Nishikori of Japan faced each other for a place in the final of the Barcelona Open on Saturday. It was
Nishikori who got off to the better start by taking the first set 6-2.

The Latvian's big serve was having little impact on the clay and his more nimble opponent pushed on in the next set. And on his third match point he reached the final by taking the second set 6-4.

You might have thought he would face the man that ousted Rafael Nadal in the last two but just a day after one of the biggest wins of his career Nicolas Almagro lost in straight sets to Santiago Giraldo.

The unseeded Colombian won the first set 7-5 before taking the next 6-3 to his obvious delight.
