The 17th Women's Fleche Wallonne got underway in perfect conditions in Belgium on Wednesday.
The 139 riders set off from Huys with a 199 kilometre ride in front of them.
Audrey Cordon, went on the attack on the second climb up the Cote de Bellaire after 95 kilometres and reached the summit with a lead of 15 seconds.
The Frenchwoman failed to grind down the chasers and was caught just before the Cote de Boussalle after 105.5 kilometres, which Marianne Vos was first to complete.
Liesbeth de Vocht then chose to strike - but the Belgian champion was caught after 116 kilometres.
With 10 kilometres remaining, Linda Villumsen of Wiggle Honda burst away from the group and the time-trial specialist managed to build up a lead of 35 seconds on entering the outskirts of Huys.
But that last brutal climb changed everything.
And coming out on top - Pauline Ferrand-Prevot.
The two-time defending French time trial champion who finished eighth in the Olympic road race in 2012 crossed the line in a time of three hours, 26 minutes and 43 seconds.
The 22-year-old - also the world road race junior champion in 2010 - finished one second ahead of Lizzie Armitstead in second and four seconds in front of Longo Borghini in third.
