Intro:
The 62nd Barcelona Open got underway on Monday, with the big guns such as eight-time winner Rafa Nadal and his Spanish compatriot David Ferrer sitting out the first round as they recover from their endeavours in Monte Carlo.
Nadal said that he hoped the extra rest gained from his early exit in Monaco will stand him in good stead for one of his favourite tournaments on the circuit and that there was "a little more motivation" this year.
Ferrer, who beat Nadal for only the sixth time in 27 attempts in the quarter-finals at Monte Carlo, played down any long-term significance in that result and said that history shows that Nadal is the better player.

"Yes, always. To have the chance to play here in Barcelona is great, no? The Sabadell Open has always been very special for me, always great support from the crowd, lot of success in the past years for me, so I hope to be ready to compete again here, and compete well, I'm enjoying the rest, of these few days after losing in Monte Carlo, so I hope to be well prepared for the tournament."

SOUNDBITE (English) David Ferrer (on whether anything has changed at the top in tennis after Monte Carlo):
"No, no, no... Of course not. Every match is different. Now we are in a new tournament, in Barcelona, I have to play a match with another player. also Rafael (Nadal), no? I think of course Rafael is better than me, no? The results are there. You know, now I am here in Barcelona and I'll try to do my best for... being in the final as well."
