Kvitova propels Czechs into Fed Cup final

Monday, April 21 2014 by SNTV
  • Intro:

Petra Kvitová (CZE) defeated Roberta Vinci (ITA) 6-3 7-5 in the third rubber of the Fed Cup semi-final on Sunday to secure a spot in the final for the seven-time champions, where they host Germany in November.

    Script:

Petra Kvitová's task was simple. Beat Italian Roberta Vinci on Sunday and the Czech Republic would reach their third Fed Cup final in four years.

Former Wimbledon champion Kvitová fired off this ace to clinch the first set.

Vinci then threatened to spoil the home favourites' party when she broke the 24-year-old mid-way through the second set.

But on a fast indoor hard-court at the CEZ Aréna, Kvitová sealed the victory on her second match point with an ace; 6-3, 7-5.

The Czechs applied polish to their success when Andrea Hlavácková and Klára Koukalová claimed the 'dead' doubles rubber against Camila Giorgi and Karin Knapp to open an unassailable 3-0 lead.

On Saturday wins for Lucie Šafárová and Kvitová handed Italy a task that ultimately proved too steep.

The seven-time champions were omnipotent in Ostrava -- a city renowned for its heavy industry -- and the Czechs will be hoping to make just as light work of Germany in the Fed Cup final in November.
