PEC Zwolle beat Eredivisie leaders Ajax 5-1 in a Dutch Cup final stopped for 30 minutes after fans threw fireworks on to the pitch. Ron Jans' side -- who are mid-table in the league -- lift the trophy for only the third time in the club's history and the first in 37 years. The match was suspended for 30 minutes because fireworks and smoke bombs were damaging the pitch and an advertising sign was set on fire at Feyenoord's De Kuip in Rotterdam.

Fireworks disrupted the start of the Dutch Cup final between Zwolle and Ajax on Sunday and the match itself proved just as explosive.

Louis van Gaal was watching on when Ajax's Dutch right-back Ricardo van Rhijn launched a rocket of a shot to put the Eredivisie leaders in front.

Moments later the game was suspended again after more objects were thrown on to the pitch by Ajax fans, prompting former goalkeeper Edwin van der Sar to plead with supporters to stop.

When the game restarted, Zwolle were ahead within seven minutes with teenager Ryan Thomas scoring twice.

The Kiwi's first goal took a big deflection off Ajax captain Niklas Moisander.

But there was no doubt about Thomas' second when he reacted quickest to the ball cannoning off the post.

Kamohelo Mokotjo then slipped in Guyon Fernandez, who finished with aplomb.

Zwolle scored their fourth when Bram van Polen's first-time cross found Fernandez, who out-jumped Moisander.

Right-back van Polen then netted himself to hand Zwolle their first Dutch Cup title in 37 years. Ajax face the blackest of nights whilst Zwolle have written their names in the stars.
